La Playa Gulf Lawn

This was a truly amazing wedding!  When I arrived at the La Playa Resort  on this Saturday in mid September it was not raining but there were very dark clouds surrounding us. I was greeted by Kevin of Botanicals on the Gulf who was putting on the finishing touches of the ceremony set up. This was another destination wedding; our couple is Victor and Liliana from New York City.

AnnMarie of IheArt Films and her colleagues had just arrived to set up also. Karl and Nanette from Luminaire Foto were also a part of this special day. It was great to see these friends!

We were all concerned about the weather and I was told by the sound engineer that even if the guests had to be under umbrellas we were going on as planned.  So, we made our contingency plan. I am joined by my colleagues Joan Stewart on violin and Si Cheng Liu on cello (substituting for Diane who is celebrating her High Holy Days) to make up the Seaside String Trio. We all had large umbrellas and if it started to rain,  we would protect our instruments first and I would hold an umbrella over Joan so she could play. That way we would still be able to provide some music. We could see rain in the distance, lightning to the north of us and heard thunder.  Just as I was thinking it would be great if we could start early before the weather got worse, the guests began to appear. Big thanks to Melanie , the venue coordinator!  As we played the prelude music, the guests mingled a bit and then word spread for them to take their places.  When I saw Reverend Les Wicker appear from the building, we began to play the Pachelbel Canon for the Processional. The Groom, Victor, led his 7 Groomsmen out across the lawn.  Grandparents and the Mothers were seated and the 4 Bridesmaids appeared carrying their beautiful bouquets. With a signal to Melanie, we switched quickly to Trumpet Voluntary for the Entrance of the Bride, Liliana.

Reverend Wicker performed a wonderful service, staying calm even through several loud claps of thunder. I think one happened just as the couple was pronounced!  As the couple exited after being introduced, we performed the Handel Hornpipe. As the guests were exiting to move on to the cocktail reception, we  performed La Rejouissance by Handel. We made it- no rain!!

It did not begin to rain until we reached the Bayview Terrace but now we were under cover so all was  good.  How lucky was that! The cocktail reception music was chosen by the couple and we had a lot of fun performing their popular song choices. They were Bubbly, Come Fly With Me, Fascinating Rhythm, Fly Me to the Moon, How Deep is Your Love, How Sweet It Is , I’ve Got You Under My Skin, Just the Way You Are, Let’s Stay Together, Love Story, Mack the Knife, Moondance, My Girl, Nothin’ Till You Hear From Me, Satin Doll, Someone to Watch Over Me, They Can’t Take That Away From Me, The Way You Look Tonight, You’re the Inspiration and Your Song.

As I was leaving I got to meet our happy Bride, Liliana. I am so glad I got to speak with her and wish her all the best! It was definitely a memorable evening!

Many thanks to KSeaside String Trio at La Playaarl and Nanette of Luminaire Foto for sharing these pictures.Seaside Strings Trio at Reception
